In 2013, Bloomberg spent over $1 million to force a complicated and unenforceable gun control bill through the Nevada Legislature. The bill passed the legislature on party lines, with 4 Democratic Assemblymen opposing the bill. Because of our hard work, Governor Sandoval vetoed the legislation. Now Bloomberg is back to force the same gun control through a ballot initiative.
We need to raise funds to make sure Nevadans know what this initiative really means – It means that you must surrender your gun to a Federal Firearms Dealer, both you and the buyer must both be there at the same time, you have to pay for the dealer’s handling, and the firearm will be recorded on federal forms, thus helping create a national gun registry. If you fail to do this, you are now a criminal and subject to arrest and other penalties, including potential seizure of your firearm. This initiative or similar laws are being proposed in all 50 states, and at the federal level. Coincidentally? The UN Small Arms Treaty is awaiting approval at the US Senate. Since Nevada law already allows you to perform background checks through the state system, and since it is already a felony to sell to a prohibited possessor, why is it so important that Bloomberg spend so much money for this initiative?
Supporters of the ballot initiative submitted 250,000 signatures on November 12, 2014. The initiative will now be sent to the 2015 Nevada Legislature. If the legislature votes in favor of the initiative and secures enough votes for a veto override, it will become law. If the legislature takes no action or the governor vetoes the bill without a veto override, it will be on the 2016 ballot.
Even if the Legislature votes against the initiative or Governor Sandoval vetoes this ballot initiative, it will go on the ballot in 2016.
